Hedgehogs and Hands

I love using little ones hands to create projects! We read the book Hedgie's Surprise by Jan Brett

Week 1:
This project was created by 3rd students who first used 12 x18 white drawing paper and made short scratch marks with oil pastels
(Colors of the oil pastels were gray, black, white, orange, brown and various tans and neutrals.)
Then students used vivid liquid watercolors to paint over the oil pastels. This resist really brought out the needle-look of the hedgehog fur.

Week 2:

Students traced around their non drawing hand. Then came the difficult part. The cutting. Students cut out at least 8 hands. They then stacked and glued together their paper hands and added a painted paper head and wiggle eye.

I really enjoy students tracing and cutting out their hands because many students do not have those cutting skills. I was amazed how so many students were frustrated cutting. This class also is a special ed class so I had to use many positive comments to keep them cutting!
