This is definitely going into the vaults as one of my favorite lessons from my
Fairy Tale and Fable Thematic Unit!
I needed to have a project for a 3rd grade classroom. You know the classroom of wiggly-gigilly boys who will work for you but really need to be outside burning off some steam. Well, I created this lesson thinking they might just be able to pull it off. When I told them of the project, I heard some moans and groans. Great, now what am I going to do!
After I heard the groans
I spun the lesson in such a way that it was cool to create a magical vehicle
that they could really deck out!
Production
Day One
Students created pumpkins out of painted paper and added shading to the pumpkin.
Next came the wheels.
Once they started, this class really enjoyed creating their wheels on the carriages. I find it funny that the boys were so silent working on the details of their fairy tale ride.
Check out the spokes on these rims! Even the Physical Education Teacher came in and was impressed with the 20" wheels on these carriages.
I love it! People are now coming into the art room to see what is being created next for the Fine Arts Festival.
Day 2
Students added stems and spiral vines with tempera paint. They were so focused when painting their vines and still the boys were excited about their carriages.
More spirals
Vines, vines, everywhere!
Loved this photo! Loved the shoes!
These pumpkins won’t disappear after midnight!
Here’s to a magical week for you!
I love this! What a great new twist on the old pumpkin theme!
ReplyDeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I'm doing a Cinderella unit with my kiddos right now. Might try it out in the classroom!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this. I am trying to brainstorm ways that I can simplify this to try with preschoolers. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteI agree...just might be my favorite too! What an ingenious use for pumpkins!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a really cute project in the Fall!! Maybe some little mice or woodland critters riding in or on the pumpkin?!?!
ReplyDeleteI am really inspired by your blog and your projects. I teach prek at a small private preschool and we did this project this week with 4 year olds. I used templates for them to trace, and for the stem tendrils and pumpkin lines, I drew them on their projects and they used paint to trace them. But they did all the painting, tracing, cutting and gluing themselves. I think they look great and the students got a whole week worth of fine motor skill practice with the pumpkin carriage and a castle project as well. I certainly underestimated the amount of time it would take for the students to do these and was over ambitious with other projects I wanted to fit in this week, but we kept working and now we have a room full of masterpieces by four year olds! I would love to send you some pictures.
ReplyDeleteKind regards,
