Symmetrical African Masks

Students in the 3rd grade looked at various African Masks for their inspiration. First, we took painted paper traced, then cut a circle. Next, we took animal print paper and created symmetrical shapes to represent facial features such a eyes, nose, cheeks, and added various decorations. With paint and metallic markers students added smaller designs to their masks. The next step was to create a background border that contained a pattern of geometric shapes. Student created some really exciting patterns while reinforcing the math concept taught in the 3rd grade.

  5. I'm having my preschool/kinder students make masks out of paper plates. I will incorporate your ideas into another project. Absolutely love how you focused on geometrical shapes. Nicely done.
