Mexican Mirrors

We are creating a Mexican Marketplace in our school. The 4th grade students did a fantastic job creating radial designs for their Mexican folk art mirrors. Totally terrific! Totally fun! 1.They first traced around a circle, then added fun patterns. 2.Outlined with a sharpie, colored in the shapes with construction paper crayons. 3. Added patterns onto copper tooling,(using the silver side to look like a mirror) 4. Glued down the mirror, and added sequins.

  5. Thanks all!

Check out my flickr photostream for more photos of projects! :)

rox - you should be able to find tooling at any craft store. You could also use tin foil, (just be care not to rip the tin foil because it is so thin.)

  9. carolinacreates,

The students received a 4 x 4 inch piece of tooling, traced around a butter lid on top, then cut out with scissors. No students were even cut, but I told them it could be sharp so be careful. After that, they used a pencil, added more designs on the border of the foil and lastly glued down the mirror with tacky glue.

(Although I wouldn't call this mexican... I mean, I am mexican and I've never seen anything like this at crafts markets...)

What´s the lesson about? Folk art? Radial design? This is something I would definatelly like to do with my kids!

  13. Yes, I have seen suns with Mirrors on them and I have a photo of tin flowers with a mirror in the center. Maybe just local folk art?
Yes students in the 4th grade - 9 years old created these. First they traced a circle- circumference, then added radial designs and patterns.
Colored in with construction paper crayons and added copper tooling with more radial patterns. I have a book that shows very nice Folk art of Mexico. Very Beautiful pieces. This meets the state standards in our Art Curriculum-Cultural and Math

(Will credit you of course.) Did you come up with all of these ideas on your own? They are stellar.
