Pirates, Ships and More!!!

I love doing this unit on Pirates. The students loved it too. We started out making the head square, oval, round, added the details, colored it with oil pastels. Then had the students create a pattern for the background. Here are some more......

and of course their pirate ships...

Flowers, Flowers, and more flowers!!

I just love this time of the year, when the flowers are all glowing at the greenhouses and lovely planters are being displayed on front porches. Of course, I always try to have some inspiration for my students to look at. Well here you can see art imitates nature.

Russian Windows

I absolutely love the old wooden houses of Russia. They have so much history, their delicate trims and fancy scroll work are a treasure for all to see. In my travels to Russia, I came across this house and loved the beauty that it stills conveys.

I had my art club students make a window using all the elements you still can see today when traveling across the countryside of Russia : Lace curtains, flowers in the windows, carved shapes on the shutters. Very fun, and educational too.

Kandinsky - Line study

I love Kandinsky's free-flowing line paintings. We looked at many of his works, then studied various lines: wavy, curly, broken, dashed, think, thin, strong, spiral to name a few. The students used tempera paint to create vivid lines and patterns. Theses were done by my 4th grade students

Russian Matryoshka's- Nesting Doll

I love Russian Nesting Dolls. They are so sweet and children love looking at them. After we examined all of my dolls in my collection the students created their own personal one. Of course, you must not forget the flowers and wonderful patterns on the outfits.

We also look at a great book that has all the different sizes of the dolls inside.

Picasso and the Lobster

A while back I did a unit on Picasso. I wanted to incorporate the geometric shapes that the 3rd grade students needed to learn. So, why not create a lobster out of those fun shapes like Picasso did. I was really pleased with the turnout and the kids had fun adding all the details and patterns.

I thought I would post my favorite project from 6th grade. I never really have been a fan of the Greek and Roman time period. Sure, I teach it but it is not my favorite time period. So, I decided to bring the mosaic border together with a Italian garden. I am sure glad I did because now it is my favorite lesson of the year. I guess after some researching, you can make anything work! Now what do I do with my garden, Italian or French inspiration?

Summer Vacation

Now, that we have been done with school for about 2 weeks, I have no new student work to add. I do have a ton of past projects that I will be posting through out the summer so sit back, relax, have some tea, and enjoy some fun elementary art projects!

Art Banner

FIrst, students cut out shape of wings on 18 x 24 paper, then they used a template to cut out the body part of the butterfly from painted paper. Then the symmetrical designs were added. These looked great hanging up!
